Chongwe Safaris is proud to have a fantastic team of expert Guides who work together across all of our properties to ensure that our guests experience the very best of the African bush. The guiding team is made up of George Mwanza, Joseph Simbeye, Moses Chiguta, Sam Mukankaulwa and Alan Bonella who are all are masters of their craft. Read some of their stories below.
George is something of a local hero. Born and raised in the village of Mugurameno, some 40km upstream of Chongwe, he started his tourism career as a canoe guide before moving to Chongwe River Camp, where he has been since 1998.
Passionate about the safari industry, George completed his guide's qualifications at Chongwe and steadily climbed the ranks. He is now our longest serving guide known for his larger than life personality and is an inspiration to the rest of the guiding team.
"I always wanted to be a guide, and am proud to be a custodian of nature," says George. "This beautiful place is not only my home, it is my classroom, because in this profession you never stop learning."
Sam's interest in the environment was piqued during his early school days when he opted for a nature studies module including numerous days' trips to game reserves to learn all about wildlife.
Sam joined us at Chongwe as housekeeper but it quickly became clear that his interests ranged well beyond the boundaries of camp. He consistently volunteered himself as a spotter on night drives and in his spare time continued to absorb everything he could about the surrounding flora and fauna.
Sam nailed his boating exams in 2009 allowing him to get out on the Zambezi as well as take guests fishing and followed up with his general exams in 2011 to secure game drives. True to form, he is continuing to progress and is studying for his walking exams to further add to his repertoire.
Guiding aside his other great passion is football. Sam plays as a striker for his local Chitokuko team and is also an avid follower of both Chelsea and Barcelona.
Moses joined the Chongwe Team in 2013 and has over 18 years of guiding experience. When asked what he is most passionate about, he says 'everything in nature or the wild! Most of all though, sharing the beauty of this park with guests who travel from all over the world to visit us'
Moses particularly enjoys the location of Chongwe River Camp. Set on the confluence of the Zambezi and Chongwe Rivers, this game rich area is one of his favorites for amazing cat and herbivore sightings.
Moses is known in camp for his seemingly boundless energy. Not one to sit still for long, if he's not guiding or preparing for the next activity, he can be found fishing, studying his bird book with a pair of binos in hand or working out to keep in shape.
Joining us in 2016 is Alan Bonella. A guide for over 20 years and in Zambia since 2008, Alan is no stranger to the Lower Zambezi.
A senior member of the Guiding Exam Committee, Alan has played a key role in mentoring and assessing many of the guides working in the valley today. He continues to share his experience and expertise with the next generation of aspiring guides.
Having previously worked in both Botswana and Namibia, Alan cites the Lower Zambezi as his favorite place to guide. He particularly enjoys the tranquility of the park and the fact it allows him to indulge in all 3 of his passions - Fishing, photography and walking safaris!
